Jason Hackenwerth

Liminal Space

February 15th - March 17th
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 15th

Lyons Wier Ortt is pleased to present Jason Hackenwerth’s newest installation - Liminal Space. Using thousands of latex balloons the gallery will be transformed into a cocoon housing a sculptural installation, accompanied by photographs, objects and video.

Upon entry, in the center of the gallery, an illuminated funerary bed offers the expiring remains of an earlier creation. Above this edifice hangs a massive sculpture representing a Mandorla or Great Architect. The sculpture hovers above us as creator and destroyer. The tension between these two elements establishes a visual interplay referencing life, death and rebirth.

On the walls, large-scale photographs capture the heroic virtue of the sculptures in their most vibrant state. These memories and keepsakes offer the viewer a romantic and cathartic vestige away from the dynamic exchange between the suspended sculpture and it’s offering below.

The video titled Rebirth features the artist being consumed by, and born of, the latex carcass in the center of the room. This video completes the cyclical concept of the exhibition.

Jason Hackenwerth received his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and BFA from Webster University in St. Louis, MO. In 2006 he had solo shows at Jang Heung Art Park in Seoul, Korea, Raid Projects in Los Angeles, Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and was the featured artist at the New Museum Gala. Mr. Hackenwerth lives and works in New York City.
